Introduction
Understanding the interplay between the living environment and older people’s multidimensional civic engagement, including associational engagement, volunteering, informal help, digital engagement, and political engagement, is paramount to having a holistic view of the ecological influences on older people’s civic engagement. Current research, however, primarily concentrates on individual and national-level features, overlooking the meso-level impact of the living environment.
Methods
Recognising that civic engagement can be best understood when the different aspects of the living environment are considered, a scoping review is conducted to examine the interplay between the living environment and multidimensional civic engagement of older people. A comprehensive literature search was conducted, covering the databases Web of Science, Sociological Abstracts, Social Services Abstracts, PubMed, and PsychInfo, through which 4011 records were identified.
Results
The results of this scoping review show the different roles that social dynamics, public health, political culture, infrastructure, and the availability of resources can play in older people’s civic engagement across diverse living environments. However, some research, focusing on the living environment and civic engagement, lacks explicit connections between environmental features and older people’s civic engagement.
Discussion
The study underscores the significance of the living environment in shaping the civic engagement of older people. Given that individuals tend to be civically engaged within their immediate surroundings, research should not underestimate the impact of the features of this environment on older people’s civic engagement.

Learning outcomes:
1. Integration of Living Environment Insights into Civic Engagement Studies for older people:
• The attendees will gain insights from the scoping review on the role of the living environment's influence on older people's civic engagement, offering a more nuanced perspective on the features shaping civic engagement in the ageing population.
2. Steps for conducting a scoping review:
• The attendees will learn about the procedure on how to conduct a scoping review, based on a comprehensive literature search using diverse databases.
