Research on sustainability highlights the use of environmentally friendly technologies, especially for the industrial and automotive sectors, to reduce the environmental impact of future developments. The automotive industry currently seeks to abandon its dependence on fossil fuel through the inclusion of electric vehicles. Despite being a more sustainable technology - at least regarding the considerable reduction in the
emission of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere - its adoption by consumers leads to an increase in the energy demand and puts additional strain on the electricity grid. The electric vehicle adoption by citizens leads to problems such as the increase in peak loads and interruptions in the energy supply. Such problems can be
solved or prevented whenever electricity companies have energy storage systems that can be used to stabilize the electricity grid or to mitigate the sudden cuts in the supply. Within electric vehicles, there exists V2G (Vehicle to Grid) technology which enables EVs in returning power to the electricity grid by using bidirectional charging systems. In this paper, we want to evaluate the extent in which V2G technology could serve as a solution to the challenges faced by energy companies as a result of the transition from traditional mobility to electric mobility. We use Belgium as a case study and project the energy consumption, the number
of electric vehicles in the fleet (including BEV - PHEV), as well as the effects on the electricity grid due to the inclusion of V2G enabled vehicles in the Belgian car fleet. In this paper, we calculate the value arising from this technological change for two specific scenarios: the use of V2G for (1) wind energy curtailment
and (2) DSO services.
