Transcending the conflict between science and theology: Lemaître & Ibn Rushd compared

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference paperResearch

Abstract

After an introduction to Lemaître’s life and work as a priest and cosmologist (1), followed by a similar presentation about Ibn Rushd (2), I proceed to a comparison (3) of both scholars in their approach to the problem of the (in)compatibility between science and religious truth. I will argue that they both use a ‘difference model’ (instead of, for example, a harmony or conflict approach). I conclude that two new subcategories are helpful: models of ‘dependence’ and ‘injectivity’, categorised under ‘interdependence’. Dependence means that religion follows science and ‘injectivity’ means that religion influences (indirectly) a personal scientific quest.
