Unveiling the Nexus: International Economic Sanctions and Their Influence on Global Food Security

Research output: Unpublished contribution to conferenceUnpublished abstract

Abstract

This research addresses the issue of international economic sanctions and their impact on global food security. It reveals a complex interplay between geopolitical strategies and the welfare of vulnerable populations. Economic sanctions are tools states or international organisations use to exert political pressure or provoke behavioural changes in target nations. These sanctions can disrupt trade and financial channels, reducing access to essential agricultural inputs, hampering production and causing food price hikes. In this scenario, their impact on food security is subject to dissimilar elements such as the country's agricultural capacity, its dependence on imports, and the duration and scope of the sanctions. This issue highlights the delicate balance between pursuing geopolitical objectives and safeguarding the human right to food and hence food security. Therefore, this research aims to assess the role of international economic sanctions as a constraint to the realisation of the human right to food and global food security. The research methods and techniques used are legal-doctrinal, legal-historical and document analysis. The main result is an assessment of the complexities of this type of sanctions regime and its humanitarian implications for achieving the human right to food and food security.
