Abstract

In a remarkable way the theme of friendship gained a central place in the so-called 'social virtual wordls' that are 'inhabited' by countless number of people. One may wonder to what extent these 'online practised friendship' have affected the nature of friendship and in what way the practices of virtual friendships are in line with their offline counterparts. In looking back at the main philosophical traditions on the theme of friendship (Aristotle, Montaigne, Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, Blanchot, Derrida), this article hints at an understanding of friendship in social virtual media.
