Abstract
In the face of (mis)information overload, the sense or non-sense of fact-checking has become a topic of intense debate. In this essay, we argue that while fact-checks have not always lived up to the promise of reducing the circulation of (online) misinformation, the practice of fact-checking is inherently valuable from a scientific point of view: it raises our awareness of potentially harmful narratives and trends that might warrant further investigation, foregrounds the expectations and values underpinning the consumption of media and information, and opens up avenues towards more refined, grassroots methods for addressing information disorders.
