Slogans aside, card companies and banks have clearly waged a War on Cash (WOC). The European Payments Council, for one, hopes that the creation of the Single Euro Payments Area will result in greater payment card use. According to McKinsey, this could help European banks save 50 to 100 billion euro per year. This article brings together a number of recent studies for Belgium and the Netherlands in order to show that the WOC is a cause worth fighting for.
