A BAYESIAN MODEL TO CONSTRUCT A KNOWLEDGE BASED SPATIAL DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM FOR THE CHAGUANA RIVER BASIN

Abstract

The present doctoral thesis explores the information challenges that environmental resources managers face in developing countries. The natural environment is the result of several complex processes that are currently being studied by the scientific community in order to improve our understanding of the world. While this occurs, decision managers have to deal with difficulties to find their way to achieve sustainable solutions for the problems that society encounters. The situation gets worse when the information they need to facilitate the process is not available. This is exactly the case in developing countries, where the information is often limited and split among several sources. Then, what to do? Well, the present research has investigated a possibility to overcome the information problem by capturing empirical and expert knowledge and transferring the information to decision managers in an intuitive way, making use of the state of the art information technology.
