AbstractThe buccal alveolar deficiency that often occurs following tooth extraction has a negative impact on aesthetics, especially in the premaxilla. Therefore, tissue augmentation is frequently needed in conjunction with implant placement. Various techniques have been described to thicken the tissues around dental implants. A connective tissue graft (CTG) is a more recent technique, which can be implemented to restore convexity when dealing with limited volume deficiencies close to the soft tissue margin.
In this PhD project, the aims were twofold. A first objective was to document the horizontal stability of a connective tissue graft (CTG) when applied at the buccal aspect of a single implant as a method to compensate for the lack of convexity. A second objective was to compare the above-mentioned contour augmentation technique with an alternative procedure, i.e. guided bone regeneration (GBR) in a RCT primarily focusing on their effectiveness, secondarily focusing on aesthetic and patient-related outcome variables.
