The aim of this Doctoral Thesis is to analyze different aspects of the phenomenon of migration in Spain. It consists of four independent but connected chapters. Firstly, migration patterns of foreigners and natives across Spanish provinces are studied to assess in how far they differ from each other. Additionally, the effect of the eruption of the economic crisis on modifying migrants’ decision making is analyzed. Special attention is paid to the existence of nonlinearities in the key economic determinants of migration. Furthermore, the impact of immigration on wages across Spanish provinces is examined by using spatial econometric techniques to detect whether there are spillovers in wage determination. Finally, the driving factors of the process of out-migration of native population from Spain to European countries during the Great Recession and its aftermath are analyzed.
