The objective of this Doctoral Thesis is to analyze different aspects of foreign direct investment (FDI) in Spain as well as the dynamics of Spanish direct investment abroad. It comprises four independent, but connected chapters, dealing with the study of FDI from complementary perspectives. The first chapter investigates the main determinants of inward FDI flows in Spain; the second chapter analyzes the role of FDI in fostering economic growth in the Spanish regions; shifting the focus now from inward to outward investment, the third chapter examines the Spanish direct investment strategy abroad and how it has been affected by the Great Recession and, finally, the fourth chapter assesses the link between Spanish direct investment abroad and exports.
