Power Electronic Applications in the Electrical Power Networks

Student thesis: Doctoral Thesis

Abstract

The subject of this thesis is the development of power electronic systems in the electrical power networks. The objectives of this research are how to improve the stability, reliability, flexibility and efficiency in the electrical power distribution networks with high power quality, in particular when there is the presence of big motor starting or/and other AC voltage sources (e.g. renewable energy systems) in the weak distribution networks. In the laboratory setup, the shunt inverter has been used for sinusoidal current loading, for power factor correction and/or for voltage harmonics compensation. The series inverter has been used for dynamic voltage correction and harmonics compensation. Both inverters can operate coupled or as standalone shunt or series configuration. So they contribute to achieve high electrical power quality in the electrical power distribution networks.
