Abstract

This thesis takes a look at the construction and representation of three black British writers in the media. In the analysis of their identity, four themes were distilled: voice, history, duality and gender. Every theme shows a different aspect of the construction of their identity and the way they represent themselves in the media. The way they are represented by the media will be shortly addressed in the conclusion. All four themes show a relation to experiences of oppression and isolation. However, they all found a way to regain power and counter their negative experiences by using their voice or their writing. In doing so they counter negative stereotypes and stand up for those who are underrepresented in the media and in history.
