Description
Research proposal. The research project ‘Beyond Boundaries: Queer Mobilities and Spatial Practices in Brussels’ is an interdisciplinary research project that aims to explore and map the mobility experiences and spatial practices of queer people in Brussels. While previous research has explored the intersection of mobility with concepts such as gender, income, ethnicity, age, and health, the link between queerness and mobility remains largely unexplored, with limited studies focusing on the UK and Israel. Building upon existing research as a foundation for the methodology, the project will explore these experiences through focus groups and visual methods to establish a Brussels case study that can provide comparative insights with the case studies from earlier research in other cities. The final visual output will be a current and potential future scenario of queer mobility in Brussels, created by the visual harvester. These scenarios will be presented at a final event at the venue of our local partner, LGBTQIA+ organisation Grands Carmes. Additionally, we aim to have an academic output in the form of a journal paper and conference presentation, including policy recommendations for local policymakers to create more inclusive mobility systems and public spaces in Brussels. The research team, led by the Mobilise Research Group of the VUB, consists of interdisciplinary researchers with backgrounds in sociology, civil engineering, and urban planning. Notably, all researchers identify as queer themselves, fostering a deeper understanding of the community's experiences.
