Description
The proposed project for the EUROPE FOR CITIZENS program 2020, aims to combat the stigmatization of migrant communities and to promote social engagement, building collaborative and solidarity networks in three European cities: Brussels, Rome and Berlin. It does so by exploiting the potential for intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding in the specific urban areas in which the partner organizations operate (Saint Gilles in Brussels, Neukölln in Berlin and Tiburtino in Rome). The action is based on the assumption that internal processes of social and spatial bordering in European cities increase the precariousness and opacity of migrants’ lives and the consequent forms of hostility and fear they provoke. This phenomenon is often expressed in areas characterized by the proximity between long-established residents and recent migrant communities, spaces of friction but also of encounter: what we define as ‘urban borderlands’. The three capitals were chosen because of Belgium, Italy and Germany different modalities of managing migration fluxes, from reception and housing to legal and civil inclusion, which play a central role in shaping social encounters and creating specific urban borderlands. On this ground, the proposed action aims at mobilizing civil society in activities fostering intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding. Addressing the perceptions and experiences of both migrants and EU citizens in the three urban borderlands through story-telling, city tours and participatory mapping, the project will foster an active and collaborative re-drawing of three European key sites from the research participants’ viewpoint. This will lead to the collaborative creation of the final co-designed installation in the three cities. The project envisions 700+ participants, will be lead by Cosmopolis (VUB) and will partner with Top in Berlin and Baobab Experience in Rome. The final aim is to leave a legacy of solidarity and social engagement that will work as 'safety net'.
