Description
Over the past decade, US-based streaming services have significantly increased their investment in European content. This research builds upon the work of Afilipoaie et al. (2021) and Iordache et al. (2022), augmenting existing data on investments in European fiction series. Our study introduces recent data on Netflix Original productions and original and exclusive content produced in European markets by Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, and Apple TV+ from 2021 to 2023. We examine the four investment types identified in the initial studies: licensed originals, full originals, co-productions/co-financing deals, and continuation deals. Our findings indicate a growing emphasis on commissioning full originals, with streaming services leveraging exclusive rights and opportunities to exploit intellectual property. However, established imbalances in the country of origin persist, with the majority of investments still concentrated in the UK, Spain, France, Italy, and Germany. Netflix remains the sole streamer to enhance investment in Central and Eastern Europe, notably in Poland. Public broadcasters continue to be preferred co-production partners, alongside subsidiaries of large media conglomerates for full originals.| Periode | 24 okt. 2024 |
