Description
Membrane structures are lightweight spatial structures made of tensioned membranes.Due to the lightweight and the high flexibility of the material, those structures offer great possibilities for designers, architects and engineers to express highest esthetical requirements.
Membrane structures are structurally optimized and highly efficient. It gives the ability to enclose large expanses of space with limited supporting elements. The lightweight of the membrane and the reduction in supporting elements makes it a cost-effective solution.
Taking the environmental impact of the project into account during the design process, requires important choices. Sustainability requirements, reducing the use of non-renewable energy and material consumption and quantifying the weight of the building becomes a basic need starting from the design stage.
The research introduces interpretation, analysis and comparison of the environmental performances of membrane structures.
Case studies analysis and comparison provides the environmental impact of the constructions. Based on the output of the case studies analysis, design criteria and indicators will be prepared as a design guide for a prototype.
Research about eco-efficiency is done based on the principle of Life Cycle Assessment. The circularity in use and at the end of life phase of membrane structures will be evaluated.
