Piezoresistive elastomer strain sensor based on a sensor fiber composite for robotic applications

Combining conductive fillers with elastomers enable the fabrication of soft strain sensors that can reach high elongations and can measure large strains. Main disadvantage is the significant stiffening of the elastomer by adding sufficient filler content to achieve acceptable sensor properties. We show a concept in which a piezoresistive monofilament elastomer composite is used to avoid stiffening effect. The monofilament consisted of a thermoplastic elastomer TPS and carbon black and it was embedded in an elastomer matrix. The resulting composite had good stretchability and on the same time good sensitivity. The possible application of the composite sensor in robotics was also explored by attaching the sensor system on the joints of a robotic arm and monitoring the position and movement of the arm using the output signal from the sensor.
