Description
Peer learning programs are introduced in several prisons globally. They are an established part of prison life in several countries (e.g., UK, USA.). In other countries, like Belgium, they are more recent. In such programs, incarcerated people are trained to educate, tutor, or otherwise support their fellow incarcerated persons. In other words, they get the possibility to participate in and contribute to everyday life in prison. A great deal of meaningful learning happens during the interactions between peer workers and peer receivers. This session focuses on several types of peer-based approaches, as well as the outcomes for incarcerated peer workers and peer receivers. In addition, it pays attention to the influence of the context (e.g. training, importance of institutional buy-in) and the mechanisms behind these programs (e.g. supporting peer workers, adopting a non-judgmental and empathic attitude). Special attention is given to peer learning programs that are experimented with in prisons across Flanders.Periode | 13 jun 2023 → 17 jun 2023 |
