Description
The goal of this doctoral dissertation is to investigate the use and effect of microlearning for librarians’ training. Learning and skills development has changed due to today’s fast-paced technology driven and connected world. Microlearning is topic-specific, can save time, reduce cognitive load, cost-effective and facilitate learning on-demand, thus it can be an ideal technique for skills acquisition as it facilitates and enhances accessibility, flexibility, efficiency and effectiveness in knowledge and skills gain, particularly for the librarianship field where librarians are now required to be well skilled to serve current tech-savvy clients. However, scientific research is needed regarding the perceived benefits and effect of microlearning as a professional training method. Four studies have been conducted in this PhD research. The first study of the dissertation focuses on analyzing librarians’ perceived training needs in order to determine the appropriate microlearning intervention. Alongside needs analysis, the research also investigated the challenges associated with librarians’ training. In study two, we designed, developed, and implemented the microlearning intervention. Following an iterative design process, seven (7) videos were designed and developed and uploaded in a dedicated YouTube channel for online access while for offline they were uploaded in the library computers. Study three aimed at assessing the influence of user- perceived benefit on the acceptance of microlearning for librarians’ training. The findings reveal microlearning to be useful and easy to use and showed a perceived difference between microlearning and other traditional learning formats in terms of accessibility, flexibility, and effectiveness. The last study of this dissertation attempted to explore the effectiveness of microlearning three months after the training intervention. Results from this study showed considerable changes amongst the librarians such as enhanced job performance, and transfer of learning. These results drew further attention to the relevance of microlearning in this modern-day training and development industry and more specifically in training librarians. Insights regarding how to develop and deliver microlearning content that improve learning outcomes are provided. The research contributes to the field of education by exploring innovative and effective methods that enhance employee training and development. This Phd research contributes to the deeper understanding of the use of microlearning by showing how microlearning leads to knowledge and skill gain of employees and eventually contributes to the workforce development.Periode | 27 okt 2023 |
