Urban vitality and safeguarding challenges? UNESCO’s heritage conventions and recommendations (21st century) and the Bruegel network (16th century)”

Description

UNESCO provides not only global perspectives on urbanization but also glocal tools to deal with it. In this talk, I will focus on two tools, the 2003 convention for the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage and the 2011 Recommendation on the Historic Urban Landscape, and the connected texts for implementation and their relation with the Agenda 2030. In order to fully appreciate the importance and significance of these 21st century tools, we will explore 16th century representations focusing on safeguarding, by Pieter Bruegel and other artists in his network extending to cultural entrepreneurs in Cologne.
