Onze eenheid ontwikkelt kennis, methoden en strategieën voor vroege diagnose, preventie en behandeling van diabetes. Deze doelstelling wordt aangepakt door middel van projecten die basisonderzoek, preklinische ontwikkeling en klinische proeven integreren en profiteren van multidisciplinaire expertise op het gebied van celbiologie en pathologie, diermodellen van ziekte en therapie, klinische biologie en diabetologie. Een Functionele Cytomics Core BioBank slaat menselijke monsters en gegevens op in drie secties, de Blood and Data Base, de Weefsel- en Histopathologiebank en de Beta Cell Bank. Onze projecten worden uitgevoerd in het VUB-Diabetes Research Center, dat ook de VUB-eenheden "Beta Cell Neogenesis" (BENE, hoofd H. Heimberg) en "Differentiation" (DIFF, hoofd L. Bouwens) omvat. Ze maken deel uit van het internationale centrum voor beta-celtherapie met zijn coördinatie-eenheid op de VUB-medische campus. Ze bieden master- en doctoraatstudenten een grondige opleiding met brede blootstelling aan diverse disciplines in de translationele geneeskunde.
