"De onderzoeksgroep Industriele Microbiologie en Voedingsbiotechnologie is gesticht in oktober 1994. Deze groep vloeit voort uit de onderafdeling Biochemische Ingenieurstechniek van de Vakgroep Chemische Ingenieurstechnieken en Industriële Scheikunde. Het onderzoeksthema is 'Onderzoek en Ontwikkeling voor een gezond dieet'. De oprichting van IMDO betekende de eigenlijke start van onderzoek in de voedingsbiotechnologie aan de Vrije Universiteit Brussel. De onderzoeksgroep is heden een van de onderzoekszwaartepunten van de universiteit"
