Deze kernfaciliteit verenigt de uitgebreide en internationaal unieke positie van de VUB op het gebied van materiaalkarakteriseringstechnieken. De faciliteit biedt een verzameling analytische instrumenten, ondersteund door de jarenlange expertise van de deelnemende onderzoeksgroepen, die de karakterisering mogelijk maakt van alle soorten materialen, gaande van organische (zoals polymeren, biologisch weefsel, botten-tanden) tot anorganische materialen (metalen, keramiek, rotsen, water...) en alle composieten en hybride interfaces daarvan. Deze technieken verschaffen inzichten van de macro- tot de nanoschaal, waarbij de nadruk ligt op bulk en individuele fasen, alsmede op oppervlakte-eigenschappen en compositiekartering met hoge resolutie.
De onderzoeksgroep wordt opgericht en ondersteund door drie onderzoeksgroepen: "Electrochemical and Surface Engineering", "Physical Chemistry and Polymer Science" en "Analytical, Environmental and Geo-Chemistry".
