"De afdeling is verantwoordelijk voor graduate onderwijs in pathologische anatomie en (post) graduate opleiding in de Experimentele Pathologie. Het doel is het opleiden van (bio) medische studenten en afgestudeerden in projecten die zich richten op vragen in Tissue en Cell Pathologie. Technische expertise ligt vooral in de gebieden van histologie, immunocytochemie, mechanismen van celdood en regeneratie, in situ hybridisatie, elektronenmicroscopie. Kwesties in chirurgische pathologie worden verder bejhandeld op het laboratorium: momenteel studies uitgevoerd op eiwit in borstkankers. Laboratoriumprojecten worden voornamelijk ondernomen op het gebied van diabetes, in samenwerking met andere VUB afdelingen en / of centra en in samenwerking met het Diabetes Centrum voor Onderzoek (zie vorige pagina). De afdeling is met name gericht op de volgende onderwerpen: 1. Samenstelling van ? cel grafts voor transplantatie; 2. Het eilandje pathologie bij diabetes en tijdens de (auto) immune vernietiging; 3. Het herstel van de ?-cellen de alvleesklier en andere soorten cellen; 4. Genen, morphogens en markers van cel differentiatie."
