He has a master degree in pharmaceutical sciences (Pharm.D.), holds a doctoral degree in in vitro toxicology (Ph.D.), is a European registered toxicologist (E.R.T.) and a trained European chemical risk assessor. His research focuses on 2 topics, namely (i) the study of mechanisms of liver toxicity to be used for in vitro modelling purposes as well as for prediction of chemical-induced liver toxicity, and (ii) the study of connexins and pannexins as drug targets and diagnostic biomarkers of liver disease. He acquired over €20 million external funding, of which most as promoter and a large portion originating from the European Horizon 2020 excellent science pillar, namely 2 grants (i.e. starting grant and proof-of-concept grant) from the European Research Council (ERC), 1 grant from the Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) program and 1 grant from the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) program, as well as national excellent research funding, including from the Flemish Methusalem program and a São Paulo excellence chair grant. He coordinates several (inter)national research projects, among which the 5-years European project called “ONTOX: ontology-driven and artificial intelligence-based repeated dose toxicity testing of chemicals for next generation risk assessment” (€17 million; 18 European and US partners). He is a regular member of 7 scientific societies in the area of toxicology and hepatology. He is past-president and honorary member of the European Society of Toxicology In Vitro (ESTIV), former steering committee member of the Belgian society of Toxicology (BelTox) and current chair of the In Vitro and In Silico Toxicology Speciality Section of the Association of European Toxicologists and European Societies of Toxicology (EUROTOX). He is editor-in-chief of the journals ToxicologyFrontiers in In Vitro Toxicology and MethodsX Pharmacology, Toxicology and Pharmaceutical Science, European editor of Applied In Vitro Toxicology, and associate editor of Current Research in ToxicologyArchives of Toxicology and Journal of Dietary Supplements.
