Expertise

Nick Van den Broeck (°1989) obtained a teaching degree (Bachelor of Secondary Education) at Katholieke Hogeschool Kempen, department Vorselaar (now Thomas More) in 2010. Through a bridging programme he obtained a MA in history at the University of Antwerp in 2013. During his studies he specialized in rural history and wrote his MA thesis on how social mechanisms allocated the effects of a crop failure in the pre-modern period. He works as a doctoral researcher at HOST where he prepares a PhD under supervision of Prof. dr. Anne Winter (VUB) and Prof. dr. Thijs Lambrecht (UGent). His PhD sets out to identify and explain spatial variations and temporal changes in (a) revenues raised for the relief of the poor, (b) conceptions of entitlement and belonging, and (c) survival strategies in rural parishes in the Southern Low Countries during the period 1750-1830.
