We aim to provide a complete stratigraphic and geochemical record of the Čanj section, up to and after the ETE to unravel the triggers for and the effects of the Tr-J mass extinction event. To do so we propose to perform a detailed multiproxy study using geochemical, biostratigraphical and geochronological study using methods extensively used and optimized at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and collaborating institutes. The main applicant, a petrologist (Sietze J. de Graaff VUB; de Graaff et al., 2017; 2018 submitted) will oversee a research team comprising the following candidates: two sedimentologists (Pim Kaskes VUB; Evenstratigraphy, Matthias Sinnesael VUB; Cyclostratigraphy; Sinnesael et al., 2016a, 2016b), a bio-geochemist (Niels J. de Winter VUB; de Winter & Claeys, 2017; de Winter et al., 2014; 2016; 2017a; 2017b, 2017c) and a paleoclimatologist (Johan Vellekoop KU Leuven & VUB; Vellekoop et al., 2014; 2015; 2016; 2017). This team has the expertise and knowledge to fully document, elucidate and complete the proposed multiproxy study, something that has yet to be done for the Čanj section.
