OZR opvangmandaat Lara Pivodic: Sociale verbondenheid aan het levenseinde van ouderen: veranderingen overheen de tijd en impact op fysieke, psychologische en spirituele palliatieve zorg uitkomsten

Projectdetails

!!Description

Although social relationships and connection with others are
important for older people living at home, they are hardly studied in
palliative care research. It has focused more on physical,
psychological and spiritual outcomes, while neglecting the social
component. Existing studies are limited in number and scope,
studying only fragments of social components; they lack theoretical
underpinning and longitudinal insights. This prevents a thorough
understanding of an important target to improve people’s well-being
at the end of life. This project builds on a comprehensive theory of
social connection to 1) study changes in the structure, function and
quality domains of social connection in older people’s last years of
life, and 2) develop and test a novel longitudinal study method to
examine temporal associations between social connection and
palliative care outcomes in older people. I will use existing
population-based data from 20 European countries to study changes
in social connection. I will develop the new method involving
professional and patient stakeholders, followed by a feasibility study
with 30 older people with palliative care needs who will be surveyed
at baseline, 3- and 6-month follow-ups. Assessments will include
structure, function and quality components of social connection, and
physical, psychological and spiritual palliative care outcomes. This
project will result in ground-breaking insights regarding the role of
social connection in dying well in old age.
