Samenvatting
In this article, it is shown how to estimate thefrequency response function of a linear system using a three-leveldigital-to-analog converter (DAC) and a 1-bit analog-to-digitalconverter (ADC). Estimation requires the usage of a three-levelperiodic stimulus signal and a sinewave, used as a dither signalto improve the effective resolution of the 1-bit ADC. By asuitable choice of the source sequence, the proposed procedureis robust to nonlinearities in the used DAC and allows detectionof nonlinearities affecting the linear filter output. This articleillustrates the main idea, its theoretical aspects, the system designparameters, and simulation and experimental results, obtainedin the case of a passive low-pass filter.

Funding Information:Experiment 1EF was carried out as part of ASHRAE Contract RP-1257 “Indoor Environmental Effects on the Performance of School Work by Children.” Experiment 2EF was carried out with financial support from two Swedish grant agencies, the Asthma and Allergy Fund and For-mas. Both experiments form part of the research program of the International Centre for Indoor Environment and Energy at the Technical University of Denmark, supported by a grant from the Danish Technical and Scientific Research Council (STVF). The authors wish to thank the technical section of the local authority responsible for the schools in which the experiments were carried out for their cooperation in setting up the experiments. They also wish to thank the teachers, parents, and pupils of the schools for their participation, Maria Schaub Hansen and Line Jark for their assistance in experiment 1EF, and Cristina Pirvu, Mateusz Komenda, and Henry Cahyadi Willem for their contributions to the execution of experiment 2EF. Many thanks to Bent Michael Nielsen for his help during selection of the Danish school and to Håkan Segerholm for his help during selection of the Swedish schools and during experiment 2EF.
