Comparison of modal behaviour in wind turbines based on drivetrain measurements

Onderzoeksoutput: Conference paper

Samenvatting

This paper analyses the dynamic behaviour of two deployed offshore wind turbines by applying operational
modal analysis methods to field measurements. In a dedicated measurement campaign, high-frequency vibration measurements are obtained at several locations on the turbines’ drivetrain. The measurements are
analysed in frequency domain using a modal parameter estimator to identify eigenmodes of the machines.
In this way, insight into the low-frequency modal behaviour of the turbines is gained. The differences in
the turbines’ modal behaviours are highlighted and the influences of environmental conditions and different
measurement approaches are examined. The work builds the basis for an extended approach to use field measurements to tune and validate turbine simulation models for their application in digital twin frameworks.
Such frameworks can then be used for continuous load assessments of offshore wind turbines and provide
damage estimations as decision support for maintenance strategies.
