Samenvatting

The process of demolition and the salvage and reuse of construction materials have received growing attention in recent scholarship in the field of construction history. However, the focus is often on specific projects, periods, tools, practices and materials. This thematic session is a deliberate departure from individual case studies, aiming to foster a more comprehensive understanding of the historical evolution of these practices. The selected papers contribute to weaving broader, interconnected narratives surrounding deconstruction, salvage, and reuse. Moreover, by acknowledging these practices as integral to the construction sector, a fresh layer and new perspectives added to recent scholarship in construction history. This recognition creates a more profound awareness of historical circular practices, underscoring their deep-rooted connections to societal transitions and fostering opportunities to recalibrate research in Construction History.
