Do you know what healthcare professionals want to know? Towards a method to identify the information needs of healthcare professionals.

Understanding the information needs of stakeholders is necessary for developing and implementing successful process mining techniques with the right requirements. Our recent systematic literature review on process mining in healthcare (De Roock & Martin, 2022) revealed that the information needs of healthcare professionals are rarely taken into account when carrying out process mining projects. Therefore, we propose a methodology to systematically identify the information needs of healthcare professionals. The method contains three main phases: (1) initiation, (2) identification of information needs, and (3) synthesis of information needs. In the first phase we identify the different stakeholders and familiarize ourselves with the specific context. In the second phase, we make a topic guide with questions relevant to the previous phase. Next, we introduce process mining to the staff and the topic guide is tested via pilot interviews. Thereafter, the first interviews or focus groups with the staff can start. After a few rounds, we propose to synthesize and analyze the current findings and link back to the stakeholders. Subsequently, the interviews or focus groups can resume. The iterative process of synthesis and linking back can be executed until information saturation is reached. Lastly, in the third phase the information needs of the different stakeholders are synthesized and analyzed. As part of the Design Science Research Methodology of Peffers et al. (2007), this method will be demonstrated in a real-life healthcare setting at the University Hospital of Brussels (UZ Brussel), where the information needs of the staff of the emergency room with regard to process mining will be identified.
