Samenvatting
This report will show different possibilities to reduce the energy bills in straddle carriers used in harbors to move containers. The possibilities range from a hybridization of the straddle carrier with the inclusion of a Rechargeable Energy Storage System (RESS) to the full electrification of the straddle carrier. The latter would entail the replacement of the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) with high energy density batteries. In between these two options, several combinations are possible.
The straddle carrier subject of the study presents a diesel-electric topology where an engine-generator group produces the electricity needed to power the motors at the wheels and the motor used to lift the containers.
