Samenvatting

Mathematics and philosophy have a long history together. In this booklet we focus on the philosophy of mathematical practice. This discipline views mathematics primarily as a human activity. It is recognized that mathematical knowledge is not immutable and infallible, but like other knowledge is socially, culturally and historically bound. We propose some philosophical themes that emerge when we take a closer look at the activities of mathematicians. We analyze how mathematicians can look for a proof, whether and how these proofs have aesthetic or explanatory properties, and what role mathematics can play in science and society. We invite the reader to reflect on this by means of assignments.
