This conceptual paper contributes to the state-of-the-art in literature by bringing together research about the skills and personality traits of Academic Entrepreneurs (AE) and the creation and exploitation of knowledge networks. Academic Entrepreneurship (AE) describes activities academics undertake to commercialize their research results. Research in this field has been mainly retrospective, considering the phenomena of established AEs, often missing to investigate the trajectory towards AE through longitudinal research. Combining these literature streams in an integrative framework allows us to identify the research gap: the trajectory of Early-Stage-Researchers (ESR) (predoctoral researchers) towards AE, and particularly its underlying dynamics. Within these dynamics, we shed light on the influence of stable personality traits and working context variables on the development of skills for (1) the creation and exploitation of networks through which knowledge is acquired and disseminated, and (2) skills for the creation/discovery and the recognition of entrepreneurial opportunities. These relationships are presented in a relational model, which also provides the basis for our propositions that will be tested in an empirical longitudinal setting. We discuss theoretical implications and present our future work.
