Functional plasticity in the bilingual brain: the case of cognitive control

Onderzoeksoutput: Meeting abstract (Book)

Samenvatting

Functional plasticity refers to the phenomenon that the neural representation of cognitive functions may change in response to a lesion or by experience alone (Donoghue, 1995). Bilingualism is one of the experiential factors that induce functional plasticity in the brain (Perani & Abutalebi, 2005). This effect is not restricted to the language domain but extends to general-purpose cognitive functions (Bialystok, 2012). Based on the behavioural and neuroimaging results from two fMRI experiments with bilingual children and young adults, this paper explores the effects of bilingualism on the neural representation of cognitive control. More specifically, the focus will lie on the specific type of measures of language proficiency that correlate with domain-general controlled processing.
