Samenvatting

This interdisciplinary collective work brings together historians, philosophers and lawyers from Belgium, France and Germany. It results from a joint seminar organised by the Research Groups Contextual Research in Law (CORE, VUB) and Centre d'histoire du droit et d'anthropologie juridique (ULB). This book explores a research gap in historiography concerning the migration of of German law professors in the 19th century. It focuses on networks and knowledge transfers, as well as on legal education, both from a transnational and comparative perspective. Big names (e.g. Warnkönig, Ahrens) are positioned within a general overview of academic circulation, e.g. highlighting the growing importance of studies and stays abroad.

The book reflects on transnational transfers and interactions for teaching and academic hiring practices, in Belgium as well as in Europe, with inevitable effect within the imperial and colonial worlds.
