While DSL and cable networks meet today's demands and services, they will be unable to support the simultaneous use of next-generation (video-based) applications; these need fibre in the access network. However, the investments to deploy fibre-based access networks, and more specifically Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) networks, are huge, and as the need for FTTH is not yet urgent, traditional telecoms players are deterred from investing in large-scale deployments. In some Western European regions, however, other parties are seizing the initiative. This paper analyses the FTTH deployment in Stock-holm, Sweden, and compares it to other successful initiatives, focusing on the initiators, their key drivers and strategies.
