Samenvatting

The accuracy of the MCMI-III narcissistic personality disorder scale was validated in a sample of 524 patients (19% had narcissistic traits). Receiver operating characteristic analyses showed that a randomly selected person with narcissistic traits scored higher on the narcissistic personality disorder scale than a randomly selected person without narcissistic traits in 67% of the cases. Sensitivity of the scale was good (75%), but the specificity was poor (51%). The MCMI-III proofed to be a good screening instrument for narcissistic traits, but to make diagnostic decisions the test should be used as part of a multimethod approach that allows aggregation over measures.
