Samenvatting

The purpose of this chapter is to provide a structured overview of the ways in which performance can be measured in elite sport. To illustrate the points being made, the summer Olympic Games is used as a case study throughout this chapter. The results of the 2008 Beijing summer Olympics, which provided the most up-to-date data available at the time of writing (2011), are the ones cited most frequently. The basic principles illustrated by these examples are transferable to different sporting contexts and it would be straightforward to apply the analysis used on the Olympic Games to the World Athletics Championships, the World Track Cycling Championships and many other elite sport events.
