N2 - The PhD research consists out of the following chapters: EMPIRICAL: -Not formal, but the more professional: Research includes all educational professionals of Community Education Centers in Flanders & Brussels (survey, N=112). Topics: professional values, professional roles, innovative methods & practices, conditions for professional development, job satisfaction, job motivation, external appriciation, sources of competences & skills, policy measures and perspectives. -Education in combination: Focusgroup research about the educational function in social-cultural work with adults. Topics: functions, aims, practices, position of the workfield in adult education and in society, professionalization, visibility of processes and results, policy frames. THEORETICAL: -Invisible profession: Topics: professional development as societal and social proces, domain occupation, acceptation of the public, internal aspects of professional development. -Empowerment as social quality: Topics: professional development, specialist or generalist? Civil society, social cohesion and social quality, experiment for a complementary perspective. -Three configurations of education: Topics: under pressure of the knowledge economy, socio-cultural work as a form of non formal education, What's on the workers' mind? Functional, social/moral, expressive/cultural dimensions of education: constellation and differentation. -Autonomy and interdependency of the professional: Legitimation of the work, instutional logics: government and politics, demand logics: customer or co-producer, provision logics: the professional.
