Samenvatting

Excerpt from the introduction of the book: There is a famous quote attributed to the famous French mathematician Jean Dieudonné: The person who will explain to me why the social setting of the small German courts of the 18th century wherein Gauss lived forced him inevitably to occupy himself with the construction of a 17-sided regular polygon, well, him I will give a chocolate medal. Although perhaps this book is not a straightforward answer to Dieudonné-s worry, at least it seems reasonable to start to think about what kind of chocolate and what kind of medal we would like to have.
