‘Koning auto’ aan de band? Toekomstbeelden voor mobiliteit in een Vlaams dorp voor 2050

Foresight is increasingly used to provide an answer to mobility challenges. Foresight is not the same as predictions, which are often found to be unreliable in the long term. Within foresight for mobility challenges, visions and scenarios are increasingly used, which respectively depict desired futures and possible futures. Visions and scenarios have already been developed for urban contexts, but this is less the case for rural contexts. This research aimed to find out how inhabitants of the Flemish countryside view their mobility in 2050 as well as how this vision would change if impacted by an unexpected future event. The research took place in the village of Oetingen, located in the Flemish Pajottenland (province of Flemish Brabant). Using the input from adult inhabitants and children, one vision and four scenarios for 2050 were developed. The research shows that in 2050, the majority of inhabitants wants to increase the share of walking and cycling for trips within the village. For trips outside the village, the car remains an important mode of transport, as is multimodal public transport.
