The article elaborates on the different understandings and related nuances and dimensions of ‘legal identity’ that can be deduced from the range of international instruments and (international) policy documents in which references to legal identity appear. In the process, the interrelation between and the respective meaning and implications of legal identity, citizenship and nationality is explored.
