As the Chinese government continues to suppress the freedom of speech in Hong Kong, some media professionals are forced to leave Hong Kong and set up different diaspora media overseas. In order to discuss the challenges and coping strategies faced by these diaspora journalists, Rushui visited the Free University of Brussels in Belgium's Yazan Badran, Adjunct Professor of Media and Communication Studies (Vrije Universiteit Brussel, VUB). Badran is a media scholar focusing on journalism and politics in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Drawing on Yazan's research on journalists in exile in Syria, this interview sheds light on how diaspora media continue to report on news from their places of origin, and how journalists in the diaspora relate to various stakeholders, such as readers at home and abroad, and from a macro perspective.
