N2 - The interactive report "Small European Film Markets: Portraits and Comparisons" collects data on the production, distribution, exhibition and reception of film from seven selected small ecosystems – Denmark, Estonia, Croatia, Ireland, Lithuania, Portugal and Flanders – as well as six large markets in Europe – France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK and Poland. The report displays information on different levels of comprehensiveness and comparison available through 21 sub-sites. The sub-sites have been set up to be readable individually. Taking a national perspective, the seven Small Film Industries from the CresCine sample (see Overall rationale) and the six Profiles of large markets allow for exploring the individual dynamics in national ecosystems. The section Performance Indicators takes a thoroughly comparative perspective allowing users to explore data ordered according to the whole value chain of film Production, Funding, Distribution, Exhibition and Reception. The Comparison with Larger Markets repeats these national and comparative perspectives broadening the scope to six large markets in Europe and the US. The comparison with larger markets specifically considers strategic points in the markets' positioning, Film Export, Films in VoD catalogs and Festival awards. The final section studies The effects of US films on local industries. The Bigger Picture presents conclusions and key takeaways in Q&A form inviting users to go back to individual details in other sections of the report. At the heart of the report are its 67 interactive data visualizations rendered in Flourish. The visualizations allow users to choose and compare specific markets, to focus on trends across years or individual years and to trace export flows in detail. As far as possible the underlying data is displayed to heighten transparency and allow users to work further with these numbers.
