The quest for adult stem cells in the pancreas has raised a lot of expectations, but also a lot of controversy. SSEA4 is a recognized marker of pluripotent stem cells, such as embryonic stem cells, and not of multipotent stem cells. Final proof for the stemness of the reported pancreatic SSEA4+ cells can only be given by clonal analysis.
