Samenvatting
The standard employment relationship has traditionally served as the starting point for labour law and social security protection in most countries. Changes in the labour market have, however, led to the emergence of diverse forms of work, leaving many workers without full labour and social security protection. This chapter examines the evolution of standard employment and its continued prevalence despite the rise of alternative forms of work. It discusses how new forms of work differ from the traditional employment relationship and the challenges they pose to existing labour and social security law. Recently adopted solutions aimed at extending protection to non-standard work are also assessed, and the chapter considers the need to adapt or create new rules to ensure comprehensive labour and social security coverage for all, thereby contributing to Sustainable Development Goals 1 and 8.
