Samenvatting

This article examines whether growing commercial interests and shared security challenges have lead China and India to mitigate their rivalry for influence and to enhance regional cooperation in their neighbourhood. It is evaluated whether various new non-traditional security challenges in neighbouring countries have fostered stronger security interdependence and resulted in a re-securitization of their regional policies. I found that despite the shared security interests China and India are not able to overcome their mutual distrust. My conclusion is that the quest for short-term gains impedes substantial security cooperation and that economic ambitions have added new impetus to the regional struggle for influence.
